A bit little steampunk, a bit little Nancy Drew, The Friday Society had a LOT going on at times: three girls in Victorian London, three alternating points of view, three different loutish male employers, a murder, gadgets, and a large cast of supporting characters. Since the murder didn't directly imperil any of the girls, the stakes never felt as high as they could have. There was also some (deliberate?) weirdness with the book's dialogue. The Friday Society takes place in 1900, but the characters inexplicably toss around modern slang phrases like"I really can't deal" and "I'm not giving a shit." But for the most part, I really enjoyed the book. The Friday Society is fun, fast-paced steampunk-lite with a strong dose of Girl Power.Read the full review and find other great YA reviews and giveaways on my blog!
